Searching in your Whimsical workspace

Whimsical has four different search options, depending on what you’re looking for:

Read on to learn how each one works, or jump to a specific section with the links above.

  • To search only the folder or file that you're in (Here), use the keyboard shortcut Command + F on Mac, or Ctrl + F on a PC.
  • To search anywhere else, use the keyboard shortcut Command + J (Mac) or Ctrl + J (PC) or click the magnifying glass icon in the sidebar on the left:

When you open the search menu, you’ll see your most recently viewed files and can navigate through them with the up and down arrow keys:

Searching "Here" will look for matches in the specific file or folder that you have open.

  • In a folder, the names of the files within will be searched
  • In a board, the file’s contents will be searched
  • In a doc, the names of any nested files will also be searched

File and folder namesLink to this section

Searching “File & folder names” will look for matches in all files and folders in your workspace that you have access to, including:

  • Your private files
  • Files shared with the workspace
  • Files that belong to teams that you are a member of
  • Files that have been shared with you

It will not return results from other workspaces you are a part of, or files or folders from other members’ private sections.

Searching “Cards” will look for matches in the titles and descriptions of cards in all files that you have access to.

Note: Searching “Here” in a file or “Everything” will also search for matching cards.

EverythingLink to this section

Finally, to look for matches in all accessible file and folder names or their contents, you can search “Everything”.

To switch to searching “Everything” after typing, hit Command + Option + Enter (Mac) or Ctrl + Alt + Enter on Windows.
